Applications are invited for volunteers to join our organisation on a 12-month volunteer programme. The Sheiling provides residential care and education, incorporating a holistic approach to education, for children and young people (aged from 6 to 25) who have severe and often complex special education needs (SEN).
This is an opportunity for you to develop skills and experience before making career decisions, taking on further study or using this experience to make a difference when you return to your home country.
You will be volunteering alongside colleagues in our residential and education teams by providing support to our students as they develop their educational and social skills and assist with special projects. We provide a ‘waking day’ curriculum where all members of staff contribute (24 hours a day /7 days a week) to helping our students develop their social, educational and emotional abilities as they progress into adulthood. Often assisting with a specific student you will support them in achieving individual targets and to pursue leisure interests. You’ll join one of 5 house teams of support workers and have set weekly hours you will be supporting the students, and comprehensive training will be provided throughout your placement.
Bringing a wide range of diverse cultural interests, perspectives and experiences our Vocational Workers provide a contribution which enriches and builds upon the work of our salaried staff. Providing a role model to young people who have limited communication skills, you’ll offer practical inspiration and positive behaviour examples for our student to imitate and learn from. In return, you will have a fantastic opportunity to make a real difference and often experience a fantastic sense of achievement. While this position is unpaid, you will be provided with food, accommodation and payment of agreed expenses.
